Blogilkar guest review: Peter Clancy's Euroviisut 2011

It's time of the year when I feature guest reviews and here comes the first one, already a tradition in this blog: Peter Clancy!Here goes:

Well it looks like the the Finninsh lineup is pretty decent this year - there are some quite nice songs, and I'm really interested to see what song will actually represent Finland in Düsseldorf....

Automatic Eye - I'm not the one who's sorry

o Nice quick opening, not sure about the lyrics, but a good beat and could appeal a lot to a younger generation (which had a major impact on the voting last year). My only concern here is sometimes there seems to be a missing beat ... and seems to go on and on... a bit repetitive ... not my favourite, but will probably progress beyond round 1. Points: 8/10

Johanna Iivanainen - Luojani mun

o Ah, a lovely ballad, nice voice and a bit anthemy - but with a twist. Don't know what it means but I like it ... not sure it will win Eurovision, but is certainly a very nice song and would do Finland proud if it gets through ... a certainty for the next round. Points: 8/10

Jonna - Puppets

o I like this, very active, makes me think of Lena and I'm not sure that Europe will go for that for a second time in a row. Don't particularly like the chorus ... though the song moves and is catchy, I don't think this will win though it's still a reasonably good song ... Points: 7/10

Marko Maunuksela - Synkän maan tango

o I like the opening, but don't think many will, and it's unlikely that people will even listen to the rest - on the other hand it will appeal to anybody getting clobbered in a bar and has had a lot of vodka - so they'll get some votes - but won't progress .... Points: 4/10

Cardiant - Rapture in time

o Wow, my ears started popping at the start of this song, it will appeal to all the deaf people given that it is potentially the only song they will be able to hear ... not sure what the percentage of deaf people is in Finland, but I don't think this will progress and I don't see it representing Finland in the Eurovision. Points: 5/10

Jimi Constantine - Party to party

o Again the opening is strong, very "Eurovisiony" and it might get points - but this style doesn't always appeal to Finland or Europe as a whole. A great party/dance song and I'll be dancing to it I'm sure over the next months .... Jimi's voice is a bit irritating though when he say "not going to live forever" Points: 7/10

Milana Misic - Sydämeni kaksi maata

o Interesting opening, and it moves nicely to the gentle melody - nice Eastern touches both melodically and in timing - but there are too many styles in one song to appeal to enough people - unlikely to get through to the semi-final. Points: 6/10

Paradise Oskar - Da da dam

o Nice opening and another nice ballad, very catching and I like it, but I'm not sure about the consistency of Oskars voice - a nice song, and a nice story - it will appeal to a lot of age groups if it makes it to Eurovision - not sure it would be a winner in Germany, but it will go through to the final I think. Points: 8/10

Soma Manuchar - Strong

o Good catch opening, a bit too "even" for too long ... not enough variety in the melody at the start, but the chorus is ok - a mediocre song, unlikely to go through to the final ... but has a chance. Points 6/10

Father McKenzie - Good enough

o I like this opening and the movement and the voice of this song. Not an overpowering song, but very seventies which might not appeal to everyone, still it has a chance to get through to the final. It would probably also get a lot of votes in Eurovision - so far this is my favourite for Finland. Points: 9/10

Sami Hintsanen - Täältä maailmaan

o I don't think Sami will appeal to enough people, this style works better for Eastern Europe - if performed well on stage then it could do ok, but I don't see it winning or getting to the final. Points: 6/10

Eveliina Määttä - Dancing in the dark

o Good song, good beat - very appealing - if performed well it will get a lot of points. Could be this years song for Finland - has all the components, a nice voice... I like it. Points: 8/10

Tommi Soidinmäki - Seis!

o Tommi's very nice voice reminds me of Russia a few years ago, not sure the mix of song style and voice will work though - I like the beat (old fashioned in some ways) and I think think this could get votes, but it won't win Eurovision if it gets through .... Points: 8/10

Saara Aalto - Bellsed with love

o Nice song here a very strong ballad, but not sure if it's going to be as strong as Oskar but this could get through to the final. Points: 8/10

Stala & So. - Pamela

o Good beat, harking back to Lordi, but ok, it worked once, why not a second time, but I don't think this is quite as unique. I don't see this getting through to the final. Points: 6/10

Suomen Karsinta Conclusion

o Top 6: two from each of the semifinals

Automatic Eye, Johanna Iivanainen, Paradise Oskar, Father McKenzie, Eveliina Määttä, Saara Aalto. Based on all of these my expectation is that Father McKenzie, Paradise Oskar or Eveliina Määttä will be representing Finland. But no matter what happens, good luck Finland !!

ESC 2016 WISH LIST: MARGARET FOR POLAND

Małgorzata Jamroży aka Margaret has also been tipped for Eurovision and apparently she did turn it down but she'd be perfect. She's got a look and persona you can't unnotice nor forget, she's got hit songs, she has been voted or nominated for everything from Trendy artist to the Hope of the Year, Fashion Icon and Glamour Woman of the year besides the usual best video, song, album, debut..... Oh she's also a fashion designer! She's very clever with social medias and would surely use it to her advantage if selected for Stockholm 2016. Her debut album is titled Add the blonde , do we need to say more? Except it includes mostly Swedish written pop tunes like Tell me how are ya , Wasted , Start a fire and Heartbeat . And of course her debut single and internationally noticed Thank you very much that you can enjoy below with all its anti-textil feel. I think she's Eurovision perfection, she's cheeky and fun, can we have her?

SONGS OF THE YEAR 2015: #5 KRISTA SIEGFRIDS - ON & OFF

Krista Siegfrids is delivering nice pop tunes one after another and this one is particularly catchy and soon you will be singing along..... Hopefully her Melodifestivalen entry will be equally good!

ESC 2016 BELARUS: NAKED WITH WOLVES?

Today's funniest Eurovision related story comes from Belarus. Some sources claim Ivan wants to perform on stage naked and with live wolf or wolves. It surely would be a first on Eurovision stage! We have seen some forgotten underwear over the years, and some cardbox animals though..... Is it time to take things a bit further? No, according the rules live animals are not allowed, and Eurovision being a family show nudity won't do either. (It seems to be ok to be half naked if you are a dancer though..... )

GOODBYE, FAREWELL...

The time has come. After all these years, 5,7 million visits, 12.000 articles I guess the time has come. As much as I love and care for Eurovision it just doesn't feel the same. The Corona years took their toll and the past two years and certain decisions have helped me to mature the idea that next year I will hear the songs for the first time in semi-final just like any so called local. The bubble has burst. Add the toxicity in social medias and fandom. The arrogant teenagers who saw their first contest somewhere 2017 or even 2021 who think they know it all and only their opinion matters. Did I mention the toxic atmosphere on social medias? I'm too old for that sh*t. It's been a long ride that took me to various Eurovision on spot as a fan and tourist, as a journalist, as a delegation member. I met some great people, made memories of lifetime. In stressful, sad periods of my life this blog has been my safe place, a place to escape and forget everything else for an hour o

CAROLA'S BOOBS STEAL THE SHOW, SVT APOLOGIES

Update! Another thing got Swedes talking last night: Carola's boobs when she was giving away an award. This is not the first time her boombs cause headlines; her misfortunate adventures in the 80's in Japan wer explained with her boobs being too big for Japanese market. Ok.... Or was it the song ? Anyways, Carola apologies and says she thinks the dress is stylish and elegant (even her friends said so) and she's a mature woman in her 40s, not a 16-year-old girl and looks like one. GREECE: HELENA PAPARIZOU HITS AGAIN WITH HAIDE

Eurovision song contest 2005 winner Helena Paparizou has been enjoying Top-5 hits every year since 2003 with the exception of 2010 and 2014, this latest one being already her 27th!
